| My Home Page | This game is everything an RPG should be. It has a huge world with complete freedom to explore, lots of things to find and play with, loads of people to talk to, and a great story. The Black Gate had the best graphics of any Ultima so far, you even got different types of weather such as rain, storms and snow. Nearly everything in the game world is interactive, and can be picked up, opened, used, or used on other things, just like a real world. You can bake bread, paint pictures, even throw water over your companions or, scare them with dirty diapers. The combat system in Ultima VII is, in my opinon, close to perfect. It is possible to pause the game during fights, and to access your backpack etc, this creates a very good strategic combat system, where you have many options how you fight. You can either turn everything to automatic, and sit back and see what happens, or you can get very involved with fights, and do everything manually. Or, you can choose something in between the two. If you want to you can get a job, live in Britania, and forget all about defeating the evil Guardian. Though Lord British might be a bit peeved if you did this. There is an expansion disk called the Forge of Virtue, although not adding a huge area to the game, this is a very good add on. Complete The Forge of Virtue and you get one of my favourite weapons, the Black Sword, Arcadion. The Black Gate will only run in dos, but there are some Fan Projects to get it running under Windows. In particular, Exult, which is looking very good. See Fan Projects section for more information. Otherwise run it on an old dos computer, if you have one. It's two hundred years since the Avatar was last in Britania, you return to find much has changed. Lord British still rules, and some people still follow the virtues, but a new organisation, called The Fellowship, has been formed and it's influence is growing stronger all the time. As the power of The Fellowship and their leader, Batlin, increases so Britanian society is changing and the influence of Lord British is weakening. Your friends and companions from previous adventures have also changed, Iolo in particular is showing his age. The Avatar arrives in the town of Trinsic at the scene of a horrific ritual murder. Christopher, the father of a young son Spark, lies decapitated in the stables, a trail of blood leads away from the body. Your intial quest is to investigate the murder, in the process you discover many other things about the new peril that Britania faces. Gradually, you come to realise that what seemed a simple quest at first is far more complex than imagined, and linked to much that is wrong in Britania. If you let him Spark will join you and your companions in the search for his fathers killers. He is a most worthy companion in my opinion. The Fellowship was formed by Batlin, and the mysterious twins, Abraham and Elizabeth. Lord British only agreed to allow the Fellowship when Batlin told him it's aim would be to serve the people of Britania. The fellowship has branches in all the main towns of Brittania, the main branch and headquaters is in Britain, capital city of Britania. Go to any fellowship branch at the right time of day, normally in the evening, and you can hear the teachings of Batlin and the Fellowship. You may even be invited to join. With the people beginning to turn away from the virtues, and Lord British becoming increasingly isolated from the people, it is easy for the Fellowship to find a gap in people's lifes that needs filling. Most ordinary members of the Fellowship are perfectly good people who have no idea of the evil being done by some members. In many cases they have been virtually brainwashed by the leaders, and the guardian. The Fellowship has three principles that all members must adhere to. These principles are called the Triad of Inner Strength. The three principles are, STRIVE FOR UNITY Unity is essential for survival. If you quarrel among yourselves you will fail. Act with one will, and unity of purpose, and you will suceed. TRUST THY BROTHER Lack of trust makes you vulnerable. If you don't trust someone you will always be questioning their actions and intentions. If you have trust then you are able to work in harmony with others, secure in the knowledge that they can be trusted. WORTHINESS PRECEDES REWARD Do not expect something for nothing. Prove yourself worthy and you will be rewarded. Accomplish things in your life and you will gain much. Expressed this way the triad of inner strength actually sounds quite good, but it is easily used by a corrupt or evil leader to enforce his will. For example: STRIVE FOR UNITY all who are in the fellowship must act in unity, and must not argue or disagree with each other. If you dispute the actions of the fellowship then you are not a worthy member. Thus strive for unity becomes never argue or disagree with what the fellowship does, just accept it and act in unity with your fellow members. TRUST THY BROTHER All who are in the Fellowship are your brothers, therefore you must trust them. If you query the actions of one of the leaders, he could say "don't you trust me? If you don't trust me you're not a good fellowship member" Thus trust thy brother becomes unquestioning obeidience and blind trust that all the actions of the Fellowship are right. WORTHINESS PRECEDES REWARD In the Fellowship only those who are worthy are rewarded. Members view it as an honour to be considered worthy. Obey the wishes of the fellowship without question and you will be considered worthy, do things that are unpleasant or seem wrong in the name of the fellowship and you will be rewarded. Thus members are under constant pressure to prove themselves worthy. Combine these three principles with pressure from the branch leaders, and it is easy to see how the Fellowship was able to have such power over the good people of Britania. Though Batlin, Abraham, and Elizabeth appear to be the leaders of the Fellowship, in reality it is the Guardian that controlls the Fellowship. The Guardian uses the Fellowship members to carry out his wishes in Brittania, and put his evil plan for domination of Britania in place. Once a member reaches the higher levels of Fellowship membership, they are sent to the meditation retreat, where they are able to hear the Guardian speak to them. They aren't aware that he is evil, and because of the Triad of Inner Strength, they obey without question. So, although unable to enter Brittania, the Guardian is able to use the Fellowship to wreak his will upon the kingdom. ![]() |
